Frankie, Zorro and I are already lounging on the bed watching television. We are anxiously awaiting the start of the new season of Mad Men. In the meantime we are watching another of our favorite shows, in which the word 'pocketbook' was used. The word slid right by me, but it sent Frankie into such a tizzy of giggles she almost fell off the bed.
Frankie: "Pocketbook! Pocketbook?"
By now she is laughing so hard she had missed the rest of the conversation, so that when she got herself under control I had to explain what a 'pocketbook' was.
Frankie: (Gasping for breath.) Seriously, what the heck is a 'pocketbook'?
Me: "It's a woman's purse, a hand bag."
Frankie: "That's ridiculous!"
Me: "Maybe, but that's what a purse is called, especially around the New England states, although we used it a lot in Pennsylvania, too."
Frankie at the time looked puzzled, and I was imagining her imagining a hardback novel sewed to a pocket from an article of clothing. Come to think of it I began imagining the same thing myself. That was ridiculous! Then again, the word purse is kind of ridiculous as well. We purse our lips. There's a racing purse, prize purse and boxing purse. Purse can also be a surname. "Hello, I'm Ms. Purse, who are you?"
I think we tend to forget that different sections of the country have different terms for things, and different pronunciations as well. Since I'm originally from 'back east', I knew instantly what 'pocketbook' meant, and the word was simply part of the
sentence. There are lots of other word peculiarities as well that we use every day. For instance, Supper compared to Dinner. Wellies to Rain Boots, Submarine Sandwiches, Poor Boys and Hoagies, Basement or Cellar, Slicker and Raincoat. Bandana or a Babushka. Here we go to spend the day at the Coast, back east we would spend the day at the Beach. Oh, I could probably go on and on.
Gee, now that I think about it, this is the kind of thing that make America great, and with Americans constantly on the move, more and more of these different/same words are going to move around as well. I kind of like that idea. If it had not been for a television show taped and broadcast from back east, Frankie never would have known was a 'pocketbook' is.
For now I will bid you all a Fond Farewell, Bye-bye, Adios, Adieu, Ciao, Ta-ta and Toodle-loo.

A River Runs Through It. Part Three
Busy, busy, busy. Man, was I busy yesterday. It was, of course, laundry day, and I got started with that chore very early because I have been tracking a package all week and knew it was supposed to be del

ivered sometime during the day, and that was going to require even more work.
I'm not a very patient person when it comes to getting something new and the wait for the package to arrive was excruciating. It kept getting later and later, I got to thinking perhaps FedEx was going to let me down.
I finally gave up and went to work, while I was in the office, I thought I heard
a gentle tap-tapping at my front door. When I went to look, there on my front stoop was a box about knee high, it looked as thought it had been through a war. I mean this box was so dilapidated I was surprised it was still in one piece. I hoped the merchandise inside was in better condition.
I didn't open the box right away because I knew I had a lot of preparation work to do before what was in the box could be put to use.
Yep, you got it, my new living room carpets had arrived, and now, I had to get rid of the old ones. I knew this was going to require a lot of work, and considering it was later in the day than I had anticipated the package would arrive I thought about tackling the job in the morning.
Nope, couldn't do it. So, I started yanking up the old carpets. I say yanking, because once the non-skid backing on them had deteriorated I had nailed them to the floor. Well, aside from the fact I was going to have to get on my hands and knees to remove all those rascal-y things I also had to sweep up a mountain of yellow, icky, tiny, dust sized backing. I tackled the backing first.
On the up side, there were not as many nails to remove as I had originally thought, but on the down side I had forgotten that BEFORE I had pounded in the nails, years before, I had used duct tape to anchor the carpets into place. Well, dang it. I got most of it up, but realized removing the residue of that could be problematic. Hmmm.
Undeterred, I swept up the backing, and then set about removing the nails. Those that I had not 'bent' pounding them in came out quite nicely. Others, not so much. THAT WAS DANG HARD WORK! There were three I simply could not remove, so doing the next best thing, I just pounded them further into the floor. (What the heck I was going to cover them up with the new carpets anyway, nobody will ever know.)
Next I tackled the residue of the duct tape. Again, on my hands and knees, and with a solution of water and ammonia, I inched along the perimeter of the old carpet and with my thumbnail scraped the tape up. I stood up and admired my handiwork. I was pretty proud of myself.
Finally I took my Swiffer out of the cleaning closet, applied one of their wet cloths and washed the floor, rewashed the floor, and rewashed the floor.
I was tired, and decided I would put down the new carpets in the morning.
WELL, THAT DIDN'T WORK. Zorro had a terrible time getting up onto the furniture, and off of it as well. He simply could not judge the distance, he was becoming very distressed and so was I. He has very long legs, and I've always feared he might break one (or more) and figured this was the 'perfect storm' for that to happen. I realized I was going to have to put down the new carpets right away.
So, after a bite to eat, I opened the dilapidated box and took out the new carpets. (You know how cats love boxes...I think this one scared her, she'd have nothing to do with it.) I spread the carpets out, and have to admit, I'm pretty darn pleased. They are sage green and quite a change from the chocolate ones that had covered the floor for years. I am a bit concerned about stains though, especially as I walked across the new carpets this morning carrying a mug full of hot coffee. Oh, and when my kitty hacks up a fur-ball. Ick.
Whatever! At least the carpets are where they are supposed to be. It's going to take a week or so for the 'folds' to flatten out and then I guess I'm going to have to decide if I'm going to anchor them down with duct tape, or nails.
It's always something, isn't it? Yep, it's always something.
At least I no longer have a chocolate river running through the middle of my living room.

The good old 'whip-woo"
Yesterday my blog was all about the 'hubba hubba', and how a man dare not use such a derogatory remark...at least out loud. Because today's woman would find it very offensive, although for the life of me I really don't understand why. But, then again it is 'me' we're talking about here.
Today I'm going to talk about the Wolf Whistle, which by today's standards is also offensive...again, I'm not sure why. I loved it when I got one, because I knew I thought I was looking pretty good when I left the house, and that somebody else did too, as I was walking to work. It meant, some guy, actually leaned on his shovel, and spent a few seconds glancing my way, and thought the view was worth it. I'm telling ya', a Wolf Whistle would make my day. Never, ever did I consider it offensive.
Oh, those good old days...those were the times. The building next to the one in which I worked housed the police and fire departments and I had to walk past it several times a day. During nice weather, the doors were always up, and Firemen, being very appreciative of a pretty girl frequently rested a shoulder against the door jams. I admit, they were not so much people watchers, but they sure liked to watch the ladies. I used to get such a kick out of watching them, watch the girls. Trust me, they probably had lecherous thoughts, but every girl got 'a look'...trust me. Although, because I had to walk by the building every day, several times a day, I became 'a fixture' so to speak and could walk by without so much as a single 'hubba hubba' or a Wolf Whistle. But, I did graduate up to 'hello's' and head nods from these fine gentlemen.
Anyway, back to the Wolf Whistle, here's what I learned this morning, thank you Wikipedia. The wolf-whistle is a two-toned sound (like 'whip-woo') and is commonly made to show approval of something or someone (originally a woman thought to be sexually attractive). "The wolf-whistle" (Supposedly) "originates from the navy General Call made with a boatswain's pipe. The general call is made on a ship to get the attention of all hands for an announcement. Sailors in harbor would whistle the general call when seeing a pretty woman to draw fellow sailors' attention to her. It was eventually picked up by passers-by, not knowing the real meaning of the whistle, and passed on. Over time, the precise tones of the general call were flattened somewhat into the wolf whistle common today." Well, not 'today', today cause a poor fellow just might get himself a ticket for 'sexual harassment' and frankly I think that's kind of sad.
Even though it's no longer acceptable, it's my belief each and every woman, should get at least one Wolf Whistle in her lifetime, because every woman has somebody in their life who thinks they are the most beautiful woman in the whole wide world and I think that person should (now in privacy of course) give that beautiful woman the Wolf Whistle she deserved.
Come on guys...give her one good, long, WHIIIIPPPP-WOOOOOOOOOOO.
And, that's all I have to say about that.

Hubba, hubba
So, today I started work early and kept at it until Zorro would have no more of it. Since it is such a lovely day, I took the winter 'covers' of my park benches and I sat in the sun for quite a while. Zorro found the whole experience fantastic. He sniffed the air, he poked his nose in and around all the front yard shrubs, and even laid in the sunny grass until he heard an unusual sound that sent him bounding up to the fence to see what the heck was going on.
As a result, my day slipped into mid-afternoon, and I have finally found a few minutes to post something on my blog.
This morning while I was working I had the TV on and tuned in to my favorite classic television channel. I've no idea why I've developed this habit, I never even listened to the radio, however now, even thought I generally don't even pay attention to what is on I guess the noise is 'friendly', whatever! However, when I finally took a break to get dressed McHale's Navy was on, and one of the guys on the show happened to exclaim "Bubba bubba". Wow, did that bring back memories. I've not heard that expression for decades.
Of course, that got me to wondering. Where did this expression come from and what does it mean. And...here we go again.
According to the Urban Dictionary, it is a Southern Slang to express approval, excitement and or pleasure. Or, it can simply be an expression to tell somebody to "hurry up". However, according to that dictionary, it also came to describe an "extremely hot or sexy looking woman". Okie, dokie then.
I was still not satisfied with that answer, so went to one of my other favorites, Dictionary.Com and found that the term became popular sometime between 1940 and 1945 and although the origin is unknown, it is probably an American expression. And became popular during WWII when military men used it to show appreciation of a 'pretty young maiden'. Some seem to think the origin could be Arabic, Chinese or Spanish, there is no real evidence to prove those theories.
Now I confess, although I remember "hubba hubba"' being used by fellows that hung out on street corners and guys working on construction sites, I was never honored with a personal "hubba hubba" which would have been nice. That's okay though, because occasionally I would get a Wolf Whistle, and that was just as good, maybe even better.
Oh, you've never heard that expression either? I think I'll save that for another time.
P.S. The term 'hubba hubba' is probably more familiar today because of the dome shaped one and two person camping tents that are available, or perhaps, for the bright orange winter squash popularly used baked or as a hardy soup. I don't do camping, but I do so enjoy a good baked squash or a hardy squash soup, yummm.

This is going to be short and sweet like kissing your brother or sister, taxes done and in the mail. I'm going to go celebrate. Hallelujah and Amen.

A River Runs Through It, Part Two
Back in January I wrote a posting about painting my living room carpet. Yes, if you are new to my blog, I did say paint my carpet. It's old, and is actually two carpets (the kind you used to be able to buy to cover your bath room floor, they were made so you could cut around your toilet, and stuff, so you could have wall to wall carpet in there).
Anyway, I had bought two of them I chocolate brown and placed them on my living room floor, holding them, where they together at the seam with duct tape. This worked great until last year, when the skid free backing began to decay and the carpets began to slip and slide around. And the duct tape lost its grip allowing the 'seam' to fray and a kind of river opened up along the edges. So, brilliant mind that I have I decided to nail down the carpets and paint the open 'river' with chocolate brown crafting paint.
Oh, boy, was that a mistake, it didn't match AT ALL, so I tried a different shade of brown. THAT DIDN'T WORK EITHER. I tried a different shade. Oh, brother. I finally took a larger, wet, brush and tried to blend the browns together, Yuck. Hence...I now have a brown river running through the middle of my living room.
It's awful. I immediately began looking through catalogs and at web sites trying to find new carpeting for my living room. In particular I was looking for those wonderful 'cut to fit' bath room kind. I looked everywhere and could find none. Oh, I could find 5x8 and 6x8 carpets but they averaged about a hundred bucks a piece and you know me, I'm cheap...'er frugal, and would never, ever pay that kind of money for a carpet.
So, I've been putting up with the river.
Fast forward to yesterday. I'm terribly disgusted with my living room, and I'm sick, sick, sick of looking at that dumb brown river. I've simply got to find those wall to wall bath room carpets. Back to the computer I go. This time instead of typing in 5x8 rugs, I typed in exactly what I was looking for.
Bathroom wall to wall carpet.
OH...MY...GOSH...WELL...I'LL...BE...DANG.
Guess what came up? Several sites with my bathroom carpets, one of which was of all places Amazon. A site I had already checked months ago, when all I could find were carpets at prices I could not afford. This time, I found them 5x6 and 5x8, cut to fit bathroom carpets in various colors for the reasonable price of 49 bucks a piece.
Okay, you can picture me dancing about, jumping up and down, laughing and squeezing Frankie until she thought she was going to die. She thought I'd gone bonkers. Well, I kind of did!!!
Needless to say, (immediately, I'm talking quick like a bunny) I logged in to my account, punched in (2), clicked purchase with one click...and my new carpets should be delivered between the 16th and 20th of the month. Woooooooo, hoooooooo!
No more brown river running through my living room. This time I ordered them in a sage green...oh, buddy, I can hardly wait.
However, I do have one small, itsy, bitsy problem. I've now got to remove all those nails I have pounded into the floor in order to remove the old carpets. That sounds kind of like a weekend job for sure. Sigh.
Ain't it always something? Yep, it's always something.

Happy Birthday
I meant to write yesterday, I truly did, but somehow the day slipped away. Actually the whole weekend passed by much, much too quickly.
I've been working hard finishing up designs of pillows for my store, and then started work on some towels for the kitchen. Once the juices get flowing I'm always amazed had how quickly the time goes by. I didn't get to bed Saturday night till almost 2 AM.
Saturday was also filled with chores, especially laundry. I still can't figure out how one Old Woman can accumulate so much of it. I've even taken to leaving the lid off my hamper because by the end of some weeks I can't keep it shut. Go figure.
Then, I started out working bright and early yesterday morning, went straight from feeding the creatures to my office...didn't even get dressed. In a blink of an eye it was after 11, and I discovered I hadn't eaten, showered or anything else for that matter. The TV was on, and old time shows were playing in the background, when I heard a commercial that the afternoon was going to be filled with a series of shows called
Doris Day Day in honor of her ninetieth birthday. What? Oh, my! I had better get my butt in gear. I wanted to watch that.
Doris was always one of my favorites, I thought she had a lovely voice, although mostly she was known for her delightful films in which she co-starred with Rock Hudson and Tony Randall. However, I confess I didn't really know about her television show (I think because my dad called the shots when it came to what we watched) so when I heard about the up coming miniseries I knew I was going to have to round up some snacks, and something to drink and 'sit a spell'.
Oh, it was a lovely day, and I probably should have been outside soaking up the sun, but frankly, the lure of an afternoon with Doris was a much more attractive
possibility. And turns out it was. The afternoon was filled with whimsy, love and laughter as she sauntered through various plots trying to survive as a widow raising two boys along the way.
It turns out she was the 'forerunner' of 'liberated women' carving the path through a new and uncharted jungle. Women no longer had to wear an apron and push a vacuum cleaner around, they could actually have careers. Ohhhhhh, and she did it with grace and style (Style, not in just the way a person can do things, but with style) the kind you wear. Boy, could she wear fashion she was gorgeous in everything. I LOVED THAT WOMAN. I tried to be like her. Of course, I was on a very limited budget, so didn't even come close, still, I wore hats, and heels, and carried gloves. I was a professional woman, too.
But, as I watched all her shows yesterday, I also discovered she was quite the comedienne. Slapstick comedy was something she could do, and do well. She was not afraid to fall into a tub of water, or get flour all over herself. She and Rose Marie could get themselves into quite some 'pickles'.
The difference between her and Lucille Ball was that Lucy stayed at home, reminding us that that was where woman's place was, while Doris Day took the woman out of the kitchen and into the office. We could not have had a better role model. Frankly, if it had not been for her, I might never have had the careers I had in the days of my
youth. In 1956 most girls were still getting married right out of high school and starting families, and very few went on to college. I was lucky, landing a job in advertising and worked my way up the ladder from 'runner' to copywriter and layout artist. It was amazing.
And, no kidding, I did try to emulate Doris, I adored her, and to be perfectly honest I still do. I think a lot of young woman of that day did and still do.
When she quit show business, I didn't hear much about her anymore, except for her work with animals. She is still quite the advocate for animal rights. Way to go Doris.
Many celebrities applauded her yesterday afternoon for the kind, loving, generous person that she is and that's why I'm heaping my own laurels upon her today.
Way to go Doris Day, happy birthday, and I'm absolutely delighted I could be part of Doris Day's Day.
